Capital One SavorOne

Review: Capital One SavorOne- Venture X Best Sidekick

Capital One has upped their game when it comes to points and miles with their recent release of the Capital One Venture X and recent improvements to transfer ratio of most their airline and hotel partners. The often overlooked card in the Capital One ecosystem is the Capital One SavorOne where it offers lucrative multipliers on daily spend for no annual fee! I will show you why the Capital One SavorOne is a very underrated card.

Capital One Savor One

Capital One Savor One Benefits

Capital One SavorOne has simple, but powerful benefits for a no annual fee card. It gives multipliers of:

  • 3% on dining, entertainment, streaming services, and groceries
  • 5% on hotels & car rentals booked through Capital One Travel
  • 8% on Vivid Seats
  • 1% on other purchases

Entertainment category include: movie theaters, museum tickets, and concert tickets. Sadly, no video games!

Earning 5% on hotel bookings and car rentals is pretty great for a no-annual fee card, and is within the line of the Chase Freedom Flex & Freedom Unlimited, except that the SavorOne does not give bonus multiplier towards flight purchases.

Vivid Seats is a very niche category, and I personally have never used it. But, you won’t miss out much even if you spend nothing on it.

Interestingly, as the SavorOne is a MasterCard World Elite card, it gives users $5 off for every $20 purchases on Fandango. You can simply link your SavorOne card to your Fandango account to activate the benefit. Entertainment category is quite rare, and earning 3% on movie theaters along with the MasterCard World Elite Fandango benefit works very well.

Streaming services include Spotify, Apple Music, Netflix, and so on. The benefit is on par with the Chase Sapphire Preferred.

Another great benefit of this card is there’s no foreign transaction fee. This is exceptional as it’s a bit rare to this day for a no annual fee card to give you peace of mind spending abroad while earning transferable miles at the same time.

Transfer Capital One Savor One Cashback to Capital One Miles

The Capital One SavorOne is advertised as a cashback card, but they can be converted into Capital One Miles if you have a card from the Capital One Venture series like Venture X, Venture, and VentureOne.

Capital One Savor One Move Rewards
You can move cashback earned to miles if you have one of the Capital One Venture series cards.

Capital One improved its travel partners transfer ratio, making Capital One Miles very competitive to other programs like American Express Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, and Citi ThankYou. This recent development makes the SavorOne a very competitive card to earn transferable miles that may even be better than the American Express Gold Card or the Citi Premier.

Things to Consider Before Applying for Capital One Savor One

Capital One can be a difficult issuer to deal with as their rules can hinder some people from applying. There are some rules and scenarios to consider about applying for a Capital One credit card:

  • Capital One will only accept one credit card application every 6 months
  • To be eligible for a Capital One card, you must not have more than 2 Capital One cards opened (minus co-branded cards)
  • If you have too many credit cards opened shown on your credit file, you may have problems getting approved for a Capital One card in general
  • This card will increase your Chase 5/24 rule status, so beware of it if you want to apply for Chase credit cards in the future.

With the recent release of the Capital One Venture X however, the rules Capital One impose may be looser at this point in time, specifically with the 2 card limit, but there needs to be some more data point to confirm. Only time will tell at the moment. However, a simple setup of a Venture card with the SavorOne is a simple, but great setup anyone can add to their credit card portfolio.

Capital One Savor vs. Capital One Savor One

The SavorOne has a “big brother” called Capital One Savor. It offers similar benefits except with the improved multipliers of 4% on entertainment, dining, and streaming services. Groceries, Vivid Seats, and everyday spending stays the same with 3%, 8%, and 1% back respectively. However, the Savor boasts a $95 annual fee. To come up ahead from the SavorOne, you must spend $9500 more on dining, streaming services, and entertainment in one year combined. This can be too much spending on those categories for many people, making the Savor not worth it for many people compared to the no annual fee SavorOne.

The Savor’s signup bonus isn’t very impressive compared to the Savor One when it comes to the requirements and the rewards. As of this post, the Savor gives you $300 or 30,000 Miles after spending $3000 in 3 months, while the SavorOne get you $200 or 20,000 Miles after spending just $500 in 3 months. Therefore, it’s not worth the effort to go after the Savor when there are many cards that offer better signup bonuses.

Some lucky people may have the old version of Savor which has no annual fee in which they reap the same benefits of the current Savor at no annual fee! Just like the Savor One, you can convert your cashback from Savor to Capital One Miles.

Conclusion

The Capital One SavorOne is one of the most overlooked credit cards in the market. The recent improvement of transfer ratio to most of Capital One transfer partners really buffed the utility of the SavorOne, making it very competitive to other cards like the Amex Gold Card and Citi Premier thanks to the strong grocery category. Plus, entertainment category is rare, so avid movie goers will definitely get a lot of mileage from this card.
